Discover local Bangladeshi gems
The food of Bangladesh builds upon the staples of fish, vegetables, lentils and rice to create dishes of great depth and subtlety. Spices are used to add vibrant colour and flavour, with mustard seeds and oil and poppy seeds appearing in many dishes. One well-known Bangladeshi favourite is biryani, a rice-based dish with Persian origins that frequently features egg, mutton or beef. It's often served during special occasions or times or celebration. Dal and nan accompany many meals along with chutney and pickles created from tangy fruits like mango and tamarind. Dessert plays an important role in Bangladeshi dining, and the country is known for its huge array of sweets. These may include bright orange jilapi, fried dough soaked in sugar syrup, or one of many dishes made with curdled milk or cheese.
Bangladeshis are one of the smallest immigrant communities in Australia, concentrated largely in Sydney and Melbourne. Their restaurants and grocers may be difficult to track down, but are well worth the effort for their unique curries and rice dishes, massive range of desserts and varied array of vegetarian dishes and products.
